Elliot Burton (Huntingdon) emerged victorious from a battle with Robert Foster-Jones (Southend) taking two wins in Super One karting Finals at Shenington circuit on Sunday, 8th July. Greg Harper (Workington) still leads the Renault-backed series after finishing fourth and fifth in rounds seven and eight at the Banbury track.
Burton and Foster-Jones each took one win in the morning heats to secure front row starts for the two Finals. The first race saw Foster-Jones take an early lead as four drivers failed to make it past the first corner.
The two leaders quickly stretched away from the chasing pack, dicing for the lead throughout. Just behind, Harper passed James Gornall (Peterborough) for third place and Jason Edgar (Cleator) took sixth place from Shaun Carter (Crowthorne).
Laura Tillett (Addington) had been running strongly in fifth before retiring at the hairpin, leaving Edgar and Carter to join the four-way battle for third. Burton and Foster-Jones continued their tussle into the final lap when Burton edged past to take his first win of the season.
He followed it up in Final 2 taking an early lead from pole position as Edgar passed Foster-Jones for second place. With the top six clear and separated into three pairs of drivers, Sam Tordoff (Leeds) pressed Harper for fifth place in the closest battle.
In the second half of the race, Edgar and Carter slowed each other as they fought for third place, with Harper taking advantage by overtaking both. Foster-Jones began to drop away from Burton and was almost caught for second place in the closing stages.
The last two laps saw Harper’s earlier opportunism undone as Edgar and Carter passed him on successive laps, Edgar hanging on for third place.
Burton’s double win lifts him to ninth in the standings, with Harper now leading Tordoff by nine points with four rounds left.
The Junior MSA British Kart Championship continues at five venues around the UK, with the next round at Warden Law circuit near Sunderland, on 25th/26th August.
