Foster-Jones gives rivals Winter Blues
Robert Foster-Jones took an emphatic win in the first round of the Winter Series yesterday (4 November) at PFi, Lincolnshire. The event also marked the inaugural running of the new KF classes in Britain.
The Ricky Flynn Motorsport driver said: “I’ve won the first KF2 race in England, so I can’t moan. To be honest, I didn’t really have the pace today but we’ll work on that. Anyway, it’s not always the fastest man who wins.”
The Southend teenager won the first heat after passing thirteen karts. In the second he again came through the pack – from 17th on the grid - to take 2nd place, and seal pole position for the final.
However, negotiating the traffic hadn’t been without its moments. Rob said: “There were a lot of die-hard moves out there. There were also a lot of newcomers into the class trying to prove themselves”.
Despite the low autumn sun shining directly into the drivers eyes making it difficult to see the lights changing from red to green, Robert got an excellent start to avoid the crashing and bashing behind him to take a lead he was never to lose.
“My game-plan was to stay away from the lunatics” Robert explained after several drivers failed to make it past the first corner. “I’m very pleased. It’s been a bit of history in the making today and that makes my win all the more satisfying. I would like to say a big ‘Thanks’ to all the team – Moose (Mickey Higham), Ricky and Gordy at GFR. They’ve all worked very hard, so this win is thanks to them.”
Foster-Jones earned the praise of team boss, Rick Flynn who said: “Rob was very good. He didn’t do a thing wrong all day. His drive in the final was excellent. Every lap was within a tenth of the other. Not even that, in fact.”
Robert’s next race is in the second round of the Winter Series, at Shenington in Oxfordshire on 2 December. But despite having the advantage in the championship he’s not wholly confident that he can win it overall - “One of the rounds clashes with the Winter Cup in Italy. Winning that race is more of a priority, so I’ll just have to see if I can win at Shenington and wrap the Winter Series title up in March. It’ll be very difficult but not impossible.”
