Ball wins final Winter Series round

Paul Carr Racing’s Jake Ball continued his run of success in KF2 with a dominant win in difficult conditions in the ABkC Winter Series at Rowrah at the weekend.

Jake didn’t have the opportunity to win the Winter Series after he missed two rounds that took place before he was old enough to race in Seniors, but winning all three of the races that he did compete in was nothing to be ashamed of.

The Kosmic driver won both qualifying heats putting him on pole for the final, but as the race started any hopes of an easy ride to the flag disappeared. He was pushed off the track and then most of the field overshot the difficult first chicane while Jake stayed in control, but by staying on track he and several others ended up at the back of the field. Usually drivers receive penalties for missing part of the track but for some reason this didn’t happen.

To make things even more difficult, it started to rain after they went out, and everyone was on slicks. The rain was coming and going so the field wasn’t called in to change tyres, but things were “a bit hairy” according to those watching the race. Jake was able to come back through the field within a few laps to battle for the lead with eventual championship winner James Abraham, and finally got the better of him to take the chequered flag first.

“I think racing in TKM really helped me deal with the conditions,” said Jake, who won the Junior TKM championship in 2007. “I’m used to having no grip, plus my dad used to make me practice on slicks in the rain to get me used to it!”

In face he was so well able to cope with it he was dicing with the leader of the next class up, who were in the same race competing for different trophies.

Jake’s next race will be the O Plate at Three Sisters at the end of March. He has won the event for two years in a row, so is eager to complete the triple now he is in a new class. In the meantime he would like to thank Paul Carr Racing for all their hard work and new sponsor Miller Oils who keep his engine running smoothly.
