Lincolnshire kart racing champion Jack Harvey put in a fantastic drive at the latest round of the KF2 MSA Super One Championship at Whilton Mill in Northamptonshire at the weekend.
The Newark Steel backed driver went into the meeting in fourth place counting dropped scores. However, he knew that it would be his last British event of the season as the final round clashes with the final round of the WSK European championship, where he currently lies just one point behind the series leader.
When he took the to circuit on Friday for free practice he was immediately at the sharp end and in qualifying he set the second fastest time to line up on the front row for the first heat. A superb opening race allowed him to convert that into second place. However, as the weather began to deteriorate Jack was unable to find the same pace.
In the second heat he was unfortunate when he clipped a kerb at the wrong angle and lost the chain, forcing him to retire on the spot from what would have been a top result.
His mixed results in the heats meant that he lined up in 13th place for the first of two finals. At the start of the first, he managed to avoid a first corner accident to move into eighth place. But, a couple of errors on the rest of the opening lap meant that he dropped back down the order and would have to fight hard to get back into a strong finishing position.
A superb drive allowed him to get back up to sixth place at the chequered flag, giving him a great chance for victory in the second final.
A solid start into the first corner meant that he kept his starting position. However, as the pack dived into the top corner he was rammed from behind and sent onto the grass and almost to the back of the field. Despite some fantastic over-taking in ever worsening conditions, Jack had to settle for 11th place at the flag.
Despite the frustrating end to his weekend, Jack was upbeat about his pace and what he achieved over the course of the meeting.
“We were very quick in the dry in testing and on Saturday and it all looked good for the weekend,” he said. “But, in the rain we struggled. I made a few errors and there was a fair bit of pushing and shoving which made life difficult.
“But, we are happy with the engines and the changes we made to the kart and it all looks good in the run up to the final round of the WSK Championship, which I’m aiming to go out and win,” he added.
Jack will be back in action for the KF2 World Cup at La Conca in Italy in three weeks time.
