Astonishing speed through the heats built Roy Johnson’s foundation for a winning strategy, despite a major setback in a heat when a lunge by Haz Truelove set him spinning over the grass. Truelove was immediately black-flagged, leaving Johnson in nineteenth to fight back to tenth and still earning second spot on the final grid, Truelove languishing in twenty-second.
Wykes rapidly scythed up to third, and was quick to regain the place from George Russell when he hit a kerb and lost time. James Armitage conceded fifth to Sam Webster after a spot of grass-cutting, Truelove reaching sixth before drifting back to eighth.
Robertson’s one final attempt at the win came to nought, as he explained: “I tried to do the cut back but I took too much speed into the corner, slid a little wide and lost speed.”
