Simpson re-signs for Birel

Michael Simpson has re signed for Birel Motorsport for the 2008 season. “We always intended to and we have now exercised our option to re sign Michael – it was a case of just deciding which programme he should do” commented Birel UK boss Andy Cox. “Michael contributed a great deal to Birel last year and with his experience and subsequent race wins we have worked together to develop the Birel RX30 SE especially for Rotax Max.

With the karting market changing we have now decided to move Michael up to KF2 to try to re capture our glory days and our market share in the KF classes in the UK. Simpson will have a great responsibility in the UK in KF2 as in 2005 and 2006 the Birel chassis won the S1 Championships in the category when in the form of ICA. He will also be joined at selective races by another Birel driver Jack Harvey.

Together Birel will have a very strong line up in KF2. But the UK is just part of the bigger picture for Simpson. Birel Motorsport President Mr Ronni Sala has plans for Simpson to take on more duties in Europe. “Sure we want Michael to help our business in the UK but also we want him to race in KF2 in the selection, the Euro Final and World Cup. This is very important for us as we want to see his capabilities for 2009 as then we have the option to move Michael up to KF1” Simpson is busy testing the 2008 Birel R31 SE and will be powered by GFR powered TM engines, his testing programme in the UK will continue into March as well as some selective tests in Italy with Birel Motorsport.
