CIK anti-crash bumper updates
At Sarno the Academy drivers were still using the front spoiler that retracts on contact, but a new version where the aluminum plate has been removed. KG has tested the system on KZ karts to adjust the level of responsiveness. The fixing is now slightly more upright.
At the regulatory level, the mechanical flag is no longer being used to intervene. A systematic review will be made after the finish, with video verification to establish the exact circumstances of the incident, before applying a penalty of 30s when the spoiler has been dislodged. The driver can also choose to return to the pits during the race to replace the spoiler as this solution may give a gain relative to the penalty.
The first case of what the officials believe was cheating was discovered during timed practice on the American Michael Benyahia’s kart.
From the CIK-FIA Stewards Decision (P77):
After the 3rd Free practice session the Technical Delegate checked the front fairing system of kart no. 520. The bumber was not in correct form, but he was not out of the fixation. After inspection the front fairing assembly it was discovered that there was a substance (glue) added between the front fairing mounting kit and the front bumber attachement points. The Stewards can’t follow the explained version of the Entrant, because the Entrant didn’t cooperate with the Stewards wish to show his evidences. The evidences (allegedly used tape) was no more exist. The Stewards see in this change of the structural conditions an attempt to deceive the Officials and to circumvent the regulations and an intentional modification of a part to achieve a personal benefit.
The Stewards decided in application of article 12.1, 12.2 and 12.3 FIA International Sporting Code.
Karting1 have posted their opinion on the updated bumper regulation, saying it removes the simplicity of what was originally an automatic drive-through penalty.
