Ilott goes F3 with Red Bull and Carlin
Callum Ilott has become the second 2015 karting graduate to sign up for F3 this year, as the 2014 European KF Champion is joining the 2013 World KF Champion Alessio Lorandi in the FIA F3 European Championship.
Ilott will be racing for Carlin and is now a member of the Red Bull Junior Team, and his team-mates will include George Russell and Antonio Giovinazzi. He’s been racing in the TRS series in New Zealand to gain experience and has tested both Renault and F3 over the winter.
“The step up is quite something, I have a lot to learn but I have already had a very good start with a few F3 tests with Carlin and a couple of tests in a Renault 2.0 before coming out to New Zealand for the Toyota Series. There are a lot of experienced people around me to learn from and it gets better every time I go out.
Ilott and Lorandi won’t be able to repeat Max Verstappen’s feat of karts>F3>F1 as the FIA have changed the rules, but it’s interesting that Red Bull seems to feel that it’s generally a good decision for experienced top level kart racers to miss out F4, FRenault etc.
