Return springs forbidden on Honda GX160 ignition switches
The MSA Technical Department has received reports of return springs being fitted to the ignition switch on Honda GX160 engines, which return the switch to the ‘on’ position when activated.
The idea being that if the switch is accidentally operated whilst running on circuit it will be immediately re-engaged. Please note that this is simply not acceptable, the Honda GX160 Technical Regulations are clear on this point:
“The on/off switch must be fitted and be capable of stopping the engine. A shroud may be attached to the casing to protect the switch, if required”.
With a spring fitted, the switch is not going to be effective in cutting the engine as when flicked to ‘off’ it will immediately return to ‘on’, unless physically held in the ‘off’ position.
