It was pouring rain in the early stages of the June 21 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series EMCO Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Lexington. Strapped into the No. 47 Doran Racing Ford Dallara was 18-year-old Ricky Taylor, who was making only his third career start in America’s most competitive road racing series.

Never having driven a Daytona Prototype in such treacherous conditions, young Taylor tapped into his experience from years ago in the Snap-On Stars of Karting to help get him through his driving stint surrounded by 40 other fierce competitors on the 2.258-mile, 13-turn road circuit.

“My Stars of Karting experience taught me how to race in the rain,” said Taylor, who co-drove the No. 47 prototype with Burt Frisselle at Mid-Ohio and the duo combined for a seventh-place finish in the 2-hour, 45-minute race. “The only other times I ever raced in the rain before Mid-Ohio was in my karting and Skip Barber days, so that was the only thing I had to refer back to as to what I needed to do, where I needed to be on the track, and what lines I needed to take. It really got me through my stint without any problems.”

Taylor just last January made his first career Rolex Series start co-driving the No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley of Wayne Taylor Racing team alongside his three-time sports car championship-winning father, Wayne Taylor, as well as full-time team co-drivers Max Angelelli and Michael Valiante at the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona.

The younger Taylor is one of the most recent Stars of Karting alumni to rise into the major auto racing ranks. His head-turning performance at Daytona, during which he drove the SunTrust Racing machine into the lead in the opening hours and resulted in an overall fifth-place finish, led to his second Rolex Series start just a few months later at Virginia International Raceway near Alton. There, Taylor co-drove with another relative youngster, Jared Beyer, in the No. 19 Beyer Racing Ford Crawford. Taylor qualified fifth and drove another steady opening-race stint before handing the car off to Beyer.

Taylor is slated to get behind the wheel of the No. 47 Doran Racing Ford Dallara at the next two Rolex Series events at Daytona (July 3) and Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala. (July 20). In addition, he’s driving full-time in the 12-race IMSA Lights Prototype class of the American Le Mans Series, where he drove the No. 11 Brach’s Racing Team Elan DP02 to his first series victory in only his fourth series start May 17 at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.

Younger brother Jordan Taylor, who turned 17 in May and, like Ricky, was a Stars of Karting regular in 2005 and 2006, has also been making noise in the Rolex Series, American Le Mans Series, and the F2000 Championship Series this year. Jordan also made his Rolex Series debut at this year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona, becoming one of the youngest in history to pilot a racing machine in America’s most prestigious endurance race when he strapped himself into the No. 17 Terra Firma Motorsports Porsche GT-class entry that scored a top-15 finish.

As they make their steady rise through the racing ranks, both Taylor brothers remain strong advocates for the racing education they received in the Stars of Karting, which hails SunTrust as its Official Bank for the third year in a row.

“I think everybody has to start in karting, and Stars of Karting is definitely the most competitive karting in North America and the best place to make a start,” Ricky Taylor said. “It’s got a long history, a lot of competition, different classes, and I think it’s just a great starting place. The whole karting thing really taught me about car control and what it takes to do well, and pass, and race, in general. It’s that foundation and learning the basics of racing there that has helped me so much.”

“It was a great formula to start my career,” Jordan Taylor said. “Basically, you start from the basics as a Cadet, and it teaches you all the fundamentals to make your way to the top class of karting. And then, that championship pushes you into the next system, which is Skip Barber or another small formula. So I think Stars of Karting is a great starting position on the ladder for young drivers. It’s definitely the most competitive championship in North America for karting. It brings teams and drivers from all over the world and they go to the best facilities in America. More than any other championship, it has more drivers and the level of the drivers is so much higher. The experience was priceless.”

Another youngster, 14-year-old Spencer Pigot, is in his fourth year of racing in the Stars of Karting series. He has driven his SunTrust-sponsored kart to four wins and five other podium finishes in the last two years in both Stars of Karting and World Karting Association competition.

Like the Taylor brothers who are paving the way up the racing ladder that lies ahead, Pigot is a proud supporter of the Stars of Karting series and has his sites set firmly on reaching the top levels of the sport.

“I think it’s a really good series. It’s all the best karters in North America. I think it’s the most competitive series in the country,” said Pigot, who won the WKA National Championship in 2006. “I think it’s the most organized series and it’s just grown and grown and has gotten good sponsors like Snap-On and SunTrust and they’ve liked what they’ve seen, as well. Some day, I’d like to race Indy cars or, obviously, Grand-Am would be really cool, too. I think the Stars of Karting is a great place to learn what I’m going to need to get to the next level.”

While it’s no secret most young karters like Pigot have aspirations to drive open-wheel someday, Ricky Taylor would advise at least some of them to recognize the future that lies ahead in a series like the Rolex Series.

“It seems like everybody wants to go open wheel,” he said. “But they’re forgetting about Grand-Am and the Rolex Series and how quickly it’s growing and I think a lot of people could have a future there.”

Jordan Taylor echoes those sentiments as he considers his future.

“I’m really happy with where I’ve gotten so far,” Jordan Taylor said. “From here, I’d definitely like to keep racing prototypes and, hopefully, do at least some of the things my dad has done. I’d love to do Le Mans and all the major endurance races in sports cars, and my main goal is the top prototype championship.”

Those who know these young gentlemen most certainly will not doubt their ability to reach their goals.

The Alpinestars backed factory Birel Motorsport racer went into the meeting second in the title race, just a single point away from the leader with just four more point-scoring races left on the 2008 calendar. In the early stages of the weekend, the newly crowned Asia-Pacific Champion set some very quick times and headed into the heats on Saturday with confidence.

However, in qualifying he was unable to match his earlier times and had to settle for a frustrating 28th fastest time, giving him plenty of work to do throughout his heats.

On Sunday morning with just two more heats to run, Jack and his Birel squad made some changes to the chassis and made some big strides towards the front of the field with a seventh and second place in the last two races before the finals.

In the first final he started 14th and got a good start but was tapped by a rival and forced to take a wide line through the first corner. Despite not losing any track positions, it put him out of contention to make up places on the opening lap and he had to settle for 11th place at the flag, just outside the all-important points.

In the grand final, he got another good start and was able to challenge right through the 15-laps and eventually took a hard earned 5th place. Despite missing out on a bigger points-haul, Jack was pleased with him performance, coming back from 28th fastest to fifth and maintaining a single point deficit to the current series’ leader.

“I felt confident going into the weekend after the speed we had at the European qualifying meeting and the early pace here,” he said. “I was frustrated a little bit about being unable to challenge as hard as I would have liked, but we managed to fight and bring home some very valuable points in the main final.

“I could look at the weekend as a bad one in that I was unable to take advantage of my rival’s lack of big results too and not pulling ahead in the championship. But, I had to work hard for what I got and I am pleased to come away still in the same position as I arrived in, with a brilliant chance to still take the WSK KF2 title. It will go down to the grand final at the last round and I am really looking forward to it,” he added.

The FIK held a meeting on 18th July (the WSK weekend) at Sarno between President Giuseppe Nole, advisers Sergio Lo Sardo and Orazio Manni, and representatives of Roberto Robazzi (Tonykart), Giancarlo Tinini (CRG) and Ronni Sala (Birel).

The two-hour meeting included discussion regarding new initiatives for karting in Italy and what the FIK is already doing with the championships and to promote the sport in general. The manufacturers were appreciative and have offered their cooperation and technical support.

There was particular consensus over President Nole’s proposals to bring karting to the general population and also the worlds of sports, advertising and entertainment. At the end of the meeting the FIK representatives announced that this cooperation would be formalised and enlarged to include other aspects of the karting economy.

Spectacular results at Sarno (Italy) are becoming a habit for British KF2 racer James Thorp after his near perfect weekend ended in victory yesterday (Sunday 20th July).

Photo: Kartpix

The weekend started well when James took pole by two tenths and he went on to use his front row advantage to win two out of his four heats. A setback came when his engine failed in another heat, dropping him down in the standings before the finals on Sunday afternoon, although his Maranello kart and Maxter engine continued to give him a two-tenth advantage.

But the two points-scoring races were what he was there for: “In the Prefinal I had to start on grid 13 as a result of my DNF heat but I was able to capitalize on my pace and take the lead on about the 6th or 7th lap, and convert it into a win which was great.”

“Then for the final, starting on pole was a lot easier for me than grid 13, and I was able to lead for more or less the whole race, barring the first lap where Matteo Vigano (Italy) led,” he added.

In the main Final he was able to go even faster, admitting that “I did not expect to win as comfortably as I did and have a six-tenth a lap advantage over my competitors, but the kart was working very well and also my engine, so the result was fantastic for me and Maranello.”

As this has now rocketed James up to third in the title hunt there will be extra motivation at the final round in Spain in October. He is 16 points behind the other two series race-winners. “I believe now that I have a chance at the title so I am looking forward to the last round of the WSK to try and clinch it, it will be very hard as both Jack Harvey (GB) and Anniello Smarrazzo (Italy) are talented, but I am looking forward to the challenge.”

The next time James will be on track is at the European Championship at Braga in Portugal in the first weekend of August. He came fourth in the Qualifier last week in Spain so will undoubtedly be among the favourites.

Despite Alessandro Manetti’s (IT, CRG/Maxter) monopoly on the heats and Prefinal, champion-elect Marco Ardigo (IT, Tonykart/Vortex) unseated him on the first lap of the final and successfully fended off Jonathan Thonon (BE, CRG/Maxter).

Prefinal
The atmosphere was more relaxed on the starting grid for the KZ2 Prefinal, where the experienced drivers enjoyed exciting grids at Sarno. Alessandro Manetti and Jonathan Thonon make up the 100% CRG front row.

The drivers detach their tyres which are stuck to the tarmac and the are off. Marco Ardigo snuck into third place behind Thonon and Manetti. Puhakka followed then Kozlinski and Forè. Thomas Mich, starting 19th, lost three places. Forè threatened Kozlinski and passed under braking on the long straight on lap two. Piccini was 14th, Cesetti 16th. Ardigo passed Thonon for 2nd place.

Benjamin Bailly moved into the top 20, Laudato into 21st. Piccini forced his way into 11th position before halfway. Manetti was widening the gap on Ardigo while Mich was back up to 14th. Thonon was only two tenths away from Ardigo and Forè only little more behind. Sixth was Giulietti in front of Carlton and Dreezen. On the ninth lap Giulietti lost three places. Sixth on the track, Renaudie was only 22nd on the timing screens following a penalty of 10” for a jumped start.

The situation appeared stable at the front of the race two laps from the end. An incontestable victory for Alessandro Manetti in front of Marco Ardigo, Jonathan Thonon, Davide Forè and Arnaud Kozlinski.

Final
There was an explosive front row including Alessandro Manetti and Marco Ardigo for the KZ2 final, the last race of the weekend. The tarmac at Sarno was still hot. Manetti stayed in the lead while Forè tried to take Ardigo, but he could not pass. Jonathan Thonon was fourth, but the surprise came from the fifth placed Alessandro Piccini! Kozlinski retired on the first lap.

Turn 2 was dramatic: Manetti was dethroned by Ardigo and Forè! Manetti then regained second followed by Thonon. Dreezen follows Forè in fifth position, as Piccini had retired. Giulietti was sixth, Benedetti seventh, Cesetti eighth. Benjamin Bailly moved into the top ten this time.

Lap 5: The first four were just a handkerchief apart; anything can happen. Renaudie was 13th, Laudato 14th and Mich 16th. Tony Lavanant in 18th achieved good times but Ardigo and Manetti alternated fastest laps. Forè passed Thonon on the seventh lap. Ardigo moved to seven tenths ahead of the Maxter. Thonon attacked Forè and Giulietti began to threaten Dreezen.

On the tenth lap, Thonon passes Forè and Manetti and ran one to two tenths faster than the leader Ardigo. The Tony Kart driver was also close to posting the fastest time in response to Thonon. Manetti went off the track on the 13th lap. Ardigo won the final in front of Thonon and Forè, then came Dreezen in fourth, Giulietti fifth and Cesetti sixth.

Brandon Maisano (FR, Intrepid/TM) has taken another win, this time in the WSK at Sarno, after strong opposition from the unknown Russian Sergei Sirotkin (Tonykart/Vortex) in the Prefinal. In the Final Maisano was able to pull out a lead of five seconds.

Prefinal
Sergei Sirotkin was on pole alongside Brandon Maïsano. A Franco-Russian competition, or TonyKart vs Intrepid for the KF3 Prefinal at Sarno.

Sirotkin led into the first corner followed by Maïsano. Staying too far right, Sirotkin and Maïsano lost places to the benefit of D’Agosto, Ceccon, Moller-Madsen and De Vries. Vainio was seventh. Camplese, Wiman and Kyvat were out. Maïsano recovered while De Vries moved into third. Maïsano soon despatched Moller-Madsen and started on Nyck. Carlos Sainz edged into ninth position, a gain of eight places. Gerard Barrabeig was stuck in 22nd position.

Maïsano attacked fanatically and successively took third then second place. On the fifth lap, he was in the wake of the leader D’Agosto. Ceccon was the third, De Vries fourth, Sirtokin fifth and Taylor sixth, followed by Sainz and Vainio.

Maïsano took command of the race on the sixth lap: impressive! De Vries took third place at the expense of Ceccon. There was a duel between Taylor and Sainz for seventh place. On the eighth lap, Maïsano escaped, Sirotkin attacked Ceccon and Sainz passed Taylor. Two laps later, De Vries threatened D’Agosto and Sirotkin passed Ceccon who retook his place a few turns later.

A great victory for the maestro of KF3, Brandon Maïsano ahead of D’Agosto, 43 milliseconds in front of De Vries. Sirotkin was fourth, Ceccon fifth, then Vainio, Sainz, Taylor, Grenhagen and Antilla.

Final
Brandon Maïsano was on pole beside Ignazio D’Agosto, followed by De Vries and Sirotkin.

De Vries gained a place. Ceccon attempted to take another competitor, but it wasn’t serious. Maïsano was already pulling away! D’Agosto took second place from De Vries while Antonio Giovinazzi hung on in fourth position. On the second lap, a group of four drivers fought just two seconds behind the leader. De Vries got away and Sirotkin was third ahead of Giovinazzi and D’Agosto.

Lap three. Ceccon edged into sixth ahead of Vainio, Anttila and Taylor. Maïsano was on his own in the lead, 2.6 seconds from De Vries. Two laps later, Ceccon passed for fifth from Giovinazzi. Taylor was close to Anttila. There was fighting between Ceccon and Vainio and to the advantage of the latter then a fastest lap for Maïsano at halfway. Ceccon took fifth from Vainio.

Maïsano, De Vries, Sirotkin and D’Agosto were in front. Anttila was stuc between Giovinazzi and Taylor. Maïsano now had a 3.6 second lead with successive fastest laps. Sirotkin was not far from De Vries and the battle continued between Anttila, Giovinazzi and Taylor.

A strong victory to Brandon Maïsano, five seconds ahead of the second, Sergei Sirotkin who found a gap on De Vries on the last lap. D’Agosto fourth, Ceccon fifth, Vainio sixth, Giovinazzi seventh, Taylor eighth and Anttila ninth.

Prefinal
Petri Suvanto and Flavio Camponeschi made up the front row of the first Prefinal of the day. Petri lost his advantage to Camponeschi on the first lap ahead of Vigano and Patrono. Cautela, Authié and Ishiyama were missing.

Vigano took the lead on the second lap. Hansen and Thorp started to move up while Suvanto dropped back. Bailly was well placed - ninth ahead of Harvey. Repechage qualifiers Tiene was already in 13th position, Frijns 18th and Luka 19th. Vigano was at the controls ahead of Thorp and Patrono by lap five. Smarrazzo passed Groman for sixth place but was Rowland back in 24th position. The gaps widened slightly at the front.

Mid-race. Hansen took over fourth from Camponeschi. Frijns was ahead of Giaguaro Nero in 16th. Suvanto was running around the 14th spot, but fails to recover. Bailly was still ninth, Wernerssson in sight of second. Thorp took the lead at the first corner on lap eight and escaped. Campopneschi came back to threaten Groman while Luka lost ground in 22nd position. Frijns was down to 18th but came back to 16th.

Victory went to James Thorp (Maranello / Maxter), coming from 13th on the grid. Second was Vigano, ahead of Patrono, Hansen, Groman, Camponeschi, Smarrazzo and Tiene. Bailly was 10th, Harvey 11th, Suvanto 13th and Frijns 17th.

Final
James Thorp and Matteo Vigano (Zanardi / Parilla) started on the front row for the KF2 final. We can expect a rebound from Petri Suvanto, Jack Harvey, and Oliver Rowland.

Karol Basz started on the grid long after his young comrades, but did not seem able to catch up leading to retirement. Vigano was ahead Thorp at the starting gun. Thorp attacked, but Camponeschi also threatened. There was a shambles the bottom of the circuit on the second lap - Thorp was the leader well ahead Camponeschi, Groman and Vigano. Hansen was fifth, Tiene sixth, Smarrazo seventh and Harvey eighth. Suvanto was only 14th.

On the third lap, Hansen threatened Tiene starting a war between the two. Harvey moved up to seventh, with Patrono in eighth. Smarrazzo was 11th. The leaders took off while Suvanto came back a little, to the 12th spot. On the eightth lap, shortly after halfway, Thorp had a three-tenth lead over Camponeschi. Vigano in fifth gained some ground on his pursuers. Frijns was 17th, Cautela 18th, Bailly moved into the top 20. Harvey did not come back on Hansen, but his team-mate Patrono attacked. On the tenth lap he resisted Hansen who sought to regain places he recently lost. Patrono retired with his chassis distorted.

In the 12th lap, Harvey took fifth ahead of Giaguaro Nero, Lennox-Lamb, Suvanto and Smarrazzo while Vigano retired. There was no change in the order before the chequered flag. Victory went to Thorp ahead of Camponeschi, Groman and Tiene. Frijns was 12th, Cautela 13th, Bailly 15th. Alban Authié was forced to retire on the eighth lap.

Alessandro Manetti has dominated KZ2 throughout Saturday and Sunday morning, followed by his team mates Thonon and Kozlinski, while there were some big names in the repechage.

Qualifying
Alessandro Manetti (CRG / Maxter) posted the best time in KZ2 with 1′03”923 ahead of Marco Ardigo (TonyKart / Vortex),the championship leader by 2.6 tenths. In third, Simo Puhakka (PCR / TM) was also in the first session. It was not until Arnaud Kozlinski in fourth place with 1′04”401 that there was a driver from the second session, a mere hundredth ahead of Davide Forè (Maranello / Maxter).

Laudato was sixth, Cozzaglio seventh, Thonon only tenth, Piccini 17th, Mich 19th. Benjamin Bailly, 13th in his session, was 30th overall, ahead of Hawksworth. The first Energy drivers, Mathias Gallepe and Tony Lavanant were in the 33rd position. Bas Lammers didn’t set a time and was 60th and last.

Saturday Heats
A review of the day in KZ2 at Sarno shows domination by CRG / Maxter, placing four drivers in the lead of the qualifying heats. Four races have been run, and there are still two to complete on Sunday morning.

Alessandro Manetti is leading, performing faultlessly with two victories. Arnaud Kozlinski is not far off, with one victory and one second place. Jonathan Thonon came back from 10th place in qualifying and peaked Saturday evening in third position. Rick Dreezen made an even stronger recovery from 12th to the 4th. Marco Ardigo, who finished second and fourth on his Tony Kart / Vortex, is provisionally in fifth place. Then another Maxter, the Maranello of Davide Forè occupies sixth place.

Sauro Cesetti, consistent in 11th position, is the top Birel driver after Francesco Laudato broke down in his first race while leading. Thomas Mich also retired on the first lap of the first race, but was very strong in second place in the next. He is 21st for the moment. Pierre Ragues is 24th, Benjamin Bailly 25th, Tony Lavanant 26th, Laudato the 27th and 28th Alessandro Piccini.

Some good drivers have had problems: Andrea Benedetti, Davide Gaggianesi, Bas Lammers, Mathias Gallepe… Each still have a heat on Sunday, which could change many things.

Sunday Heats
Thanks to a third victory this morning, Alessandro Manetti (CRG / Maxter) took a dominating pole position in KZ2. The supremacy of CRG was confirmed with second place for Jonathan Thonon and third for Arnaud Kozlinski. Marco Ardigo took fourth position on equal points with Rick Dreezen.

Davide Forè retains his chances with a third row start. Manuel Cozzaglio starts ninth, Sauro Cesetti 11th. Thomas Mich is back in 16th place. Alessandro Piccini is on the 19th row, ahead of Benjamin Bailly. Pierre Ragues and Christophe Benoit also qualified for the finals.

A few big names are in the unqualified: Davide Gaggianesi, Tony Lavanant, Kenneth Ostvold, Francesco Laudato, Mathias Gallepe and Bas Lammers, a victim of two retirements. The repechage will be entertaining …

Repechage
In the repechage Gaggianesi made the best start, while Lavanant dropped back a little and Annunziata, Marconi and Schoonerwaldt got ahead. But Laudato came back strong to third on the second lap. Lavanant moved back to fifth position, while his team-mate Gallepe was cruising in tenth.

Laudato passed second. Bas Lammers retired once again - this weekend is finished for him and probably also for his chances for the championship. Kenneth Ostvold falls moved into the top six on lap four. Gaggianesi stayed in the lead ahead of Laudato, Annunziata and Marconi.

Hanssen and Gallepe passed Schoonerwaldt but the positions at the top were frozen at the beginning of the last lap. Victory went to Gaggianesi ahead of Laudato, Annunziata, Marconi, Lavanant and Ostvold who will participate in the finals.
