Chamberlain wins again to strengthen KF2 challenge
The third round of the Super One National Championship was held on a wet and dry weekend, not the ideal conditions for either driver or team manager, but Jordan Chamberlain overcame bad luck in the early stages of the meeting to take two wins at Rowrah in Cumbria to further strengthen his KF2 championship challenge.
As he explained, Rowrah was set to be one of the toughest but most enjoyable events of the year:
“I think Rowrah is undoubtedly one of the best circuits in the UK, I’m always excited to see it on the calendar as it has everything from downhill to uphill, fast corners and slow corners and it’s always interesting because the weather is usually unpredictable there. I finished second there last year in both Finals so I was looking to improve on that this year and I was pretty confident after my two wins at Shenington. I was also very confident after the quick lap times I had been producing in the wet and dry practice sessions.”
Driving a Williams Motorsport-prepared Tonykart, Jordan’s race day started off well in timed practice which was wet and Jordan qualified second, just 0.01s off pole.
“I was leading Heat 1 on dry tyres, had a healthy gap, but was caught out by a shower of rain that sent me into the tyre barrier. I ended up coming back on and crawling my way to 15th with a damaged kart, setting the fastest lap as well. I came second to Jake Ball in Heat 2 when I had a bad start and couldn’t make up lost ground but I set the fastest lap again.”
“In Final 1 I started seventh and by lap 6 I was in the lead and pulled out a gap where I was able to relax for the last five or six laps, and again I got the fastest lap. Then I went off pole in the second final, lost the lead on lap 2 to my team mate Shaun Carter, then after two laps I overtook him and immediately pulled away which continued until the flag.”
The team had worked hard all weekend with two karts to prepare – one for the wet and one for the dry. “A lot of credit goes to my dad (my mechanic) and Jason Williams, my team manager, not forgeting my engine builder Gordy at GFR Engines. I have to say the drive home to Wales was a lot more cheerful knowing we came away with a victory… the excitement of that kept me awake for the whole seven hour journey!”
Jordan will take a 10-point lead over Carter into the next round of the championship at Whilton Mill on 5th July, which will mark the halfway point of the championship. However, he also has his GCSEs to deal with which has prevented him from testing as much as he would have liked, but with only three exams left Jordan will soon be able to hit the track and work on the areas he needs to improve on.
