Driver Update: Mathewson Father/Son Score Wins at Great Lakes Pro Series

July 8, 2009

The Krahl Construction Great Lakes Pro Series (GLPS) presented by MG Tires made its first visit to the growing Goodland Grand Prix in small northwest Indiana town just east of the Illinois border over the June 27-28 weekend. Working with the Southern Indiana Karting Association, the seventh annual event went off with great success as competitors enjoyed two-days of action around the town’s streets.

The father/son duo of Kurt and Cole Mathewson scored victories in two of the top divisions in the GLPS class roster. Cole put in a dominant performance in the Pro Shifter category as he outran championship contenders Cody Elliott and Alex Conlin and also won the special money race Saturday night. Kurt on the other hand fought valiantly all Sunday with series friend and rival Chris Shultz. It was Shultz that had the edge in qualifying and the Prefinal with Mathewson on his tail. The Final came down to the final circuit of the 18-lap race as the two went side by side through turn seven. Shultz was on the outside as Mathewson slide inside to overtake. As they exited the corner, Shultz made contact with the outside barrier and went spinning. Mathewson avoided Shultz and went on to take the checkered flag. Andrew Stevenson was awarded second with Matt Tangeman in the third spot.

Mathewson’s teammate Jason Lee continues to be the driver to beat in the Stock Moto Shifter division as he swept that division in the streets of Goodland. Lee lead the way in qualifying, Prefinal and Final with Eric Sove and Tim Hans completing the top-three. Colton Aldridge was the feature winner in the TaG Senior category with Saturday money race winner Jacob Sekey retiring early. Geoff Howard ran to the second spot with Nick Aue in third. Scott Hamble won another feature in TaG Masters competition with Brian Valin and Michael Richey completing the podium. In Rotax competition, Steve Scheiver was the winner in Rotax Senior, beating Michael Johnson and Cody Elliott to the line, while Karl Weber was the lone Mini Max competitor on the weekend.

The series will take the month of July off after a busy three months of racing, allowing competitors and the series staff to rejuvenate for the three remaining events that the Great Lakes Pro Series will be a part of. On August 1, the GLPS will be holding a non-points 125-lap Stock Moto Shifter endurance event at the New Castle Motorsports Park. The event will run in conjunction with the local KRA Series double header weekend. The following week, the series returns to championship action as the second double header of the season set for the Circleville Raceway Park in Ohio on August 8-9. The eighth and final round of the season will then take the competitors to the lone long track event of the year at the Grattan Raceway in Belding, Michigan on August 30 with the Championship Enduro Series.
