June 13, 2012 U18 to be gone next year?

We have heard that the U18 World Championship could well either not go ahead next year or be in a different form.

Apparently if it carries on it may be on a different engine/kart, and may not be called a World Championship.

There is a proposal on the table at the CIK-FIA to run three World Championships next year – KZ1, KF2 (renamed KF) and KF3 (KF Junior), and there was no mention of the U18 World Championship.

I think the championship is very good, and I started off extremely cynical about the whole idea. The main problem I have is the age limit, it perpetuates the image karting has of being just for kids and surely drivers who are older and probably paying for their own racing deserve an affordable championship as much as anyone?

But on the other hand I think it’s good to have a championship without over-complicated engines and chassis.

So if a change ends up being the removal of the under 18 age restriction or the introduction of an over-18 class I will be fully behind it.

If however the objections end up being traced back to the big teams objecting to a successful championship that they can’t make money from I think that is despicable.
