February 18, 2013 Verstappen wins Winter Cup after a holdup for Nielsen

l Winter Cup, Lonato

Max Verstappen (CRG/TM) has won the 2013 Winter Cup in KF (KF2) by 4s after his main opponent Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic/Vortex) failed to start on the dummy grid.

Armand Convers (Kosmic/Vortex) won the Repechage ahead of his teammate Luca Corberi.

Nielsen got the better of Verstappen on the 17th lap of the Prefinal. Aatu Moilanen (Kosmic/Vortex) gave up 3rd place to Paolo Ippolito (RK/TM), while Martin Kodric (Alonso/Vortex) finished 5th. Dorian Boccolacci’s (Energy/TM) kart was not up to the job after a difficult start for his file and he dropped back to 7th from Wing Chung Chang (Tony/Vortex) while Convers finished 8th from 29th on the grid. Sébastien Bailly (Birel/TM) retired at the start and Tom Joyner (Zanardi/Parilla) also dropped out, a little later.

Nielsen didn’t start on the Final grid and couldn’t then take his place. The main protagonist Verstappen was also on the front row, so the road to victory was cleared for the Dutch champion who only widened the gap until his triumphant finish with a lead of more than 4s.

In contrast, for 2nd place, the battle wasn’t dull. Ippolito, Moilanen and Kodric started the show before being joined by Convers. Kodric reaped the benefit to take the 3rd step on the podium and Moilanen controlled Ippolito. Karol Basz (Tony/Vortex) completed a great comeback from 16th position, finishing sixth. Visibly down in performance, Boccolacci needed all his energy to maintain his position, seventh on the line, ahead of Wing Chung, George Russell (Birel/TM) and Nielsen up from 34th place. Bailly was 16th.
